During the first 200 years of this country, the two textbooks everyone used were the Bible and The New England Primer (pronounced with a short "i" as in "it"). A few years after I began on what's become a vast, 14-year, history-learning program, I knew that the American adults needed a "primer" on the truthful basics of what's gone on during the past century, supported with easy-to-get resources. A fabulous "family - read out loud" book: years before Glenn Beck's promotion: The 5000 Year Leap by W. Cleon Skousen
(Hint to parents: I always heard about the pluses of parents reading to their children, which we did. But I found a HUGE benefit with out last child was him reading out loud to me . . . tons of hours especially during high school & some during college . . . most of his history books of high school [I read his college ones on my own.], newspaper articles & especially the editorial opinions/comments written by the locals - plus international news, magazine articles, and such. His reading skills increased tremendously through the years, and his knowledge of how to pronounce many, many words - especially the "crazies" of English, and those foreign-based ones. And I'd suggest one kid at a time for their feeling of one-on-one time with you . . . like while you're making supper, in the car, working in the garage - on the lawn - or on a hobby, etc. You'll both reap amazing blessings!)
